A few years ago, I claimed a Delay Repay on Northern Rail, opting for the free ticket.

It turned out to be a SINGLE between 2 stations on the Northern Rail network. And was only valid on Northern Rail services.

This got me thinking- “What’s the longest journey I could do under these conditions?”

It was Scarborough to Whitby.

It’s half an hour in the car.

50 minutes on the bus.

If you travel by Transpennine Express and Northern Rail, it’s 4.5 hours and 3 trains.

But I had to do it entirely on Northern Rail.

The shortest route is Scarborough-Hull-Leeds-Carlisle-Newcastle-Middlesbrough-Whitby (map here).

It takes 6 trains, and over 13 hours.
